How to Extract a Color Palette from Any Image

Learn how color palette extraction algorithms work, how to use dominant colors for brand design, and how to extract Hex/RGB/HSL values from images online.

What is Color Palette Extraction?

Color palette extraction analyzes pixel data in an image and identifies the most dominant, representative colors using clustering algorithms like k-means or median cut. The result is a small set of colors that best represent the visual identity of the image.

How k-Means Clustering Works on Images

K-means groups pixels into k clusters by color similarity. Each cluster centroid becomes a palette color. With k=8, you get the 8 most dominant colors. The algorithm iterates until cluster assignments stabilize. Our extractor runs this in the browser using Canvas pixel data — no image is uploaded to any server.

Using Extracted Palettes for Design

Brand matching: Extract colors from a client's existing photography to build a consistent color system. UI theming: Use dominant photo colors as theme accents. Mood boards: Extract from inspiration images to capture a visual mood. The extracted Hex values can be directly imported into Figma, Adobe XD, or CSS variables.

Privacy

Our image palette extractor processes everything locally in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. No image data is ever sent to any server.
